Over a decade ago, Dick Smith created Dick Smith Foods to support Australian farmers and businesses. Not generally known is that Dick was motivated by the American film star, Paul Newman, and Newman’s Own food company.
Paul and his mate “Hotch” began bottling salad dressing to give away as Christmas presents, but demand was so great they started their own business. Dick was particularly impressed with Paul’s statement when he saw the profits at the end of their first year: "Let's give it all away to those who need it."
Dick Smith decided to copy Paul's leadership.
Since it began, Dick Smith Foods has given all of its profits to charity – some $4.8 million so far.
Dick hopes to catch up to, and match, the huge amount that Newman’s Own Foundation has donated in Australia – over $18 million. He’s also been motivated by the late Dame Elizabeth Murdoch. He believes that she set a great example of how those who are well off should act.
Dick receives no remuneration or financial benefit from Dick Smith Foods. He donates an extensive amount of time and expertise to fulfill his obligation of helping others especially Australian farmers, factory workers and those in need.
He’s disappointed that most of the income from Dick Smith Foods royalties has gone not to important charities, but to the Murdoch Press and other foreign-owned multinationals in advertising costs.
Dick appreciates programs like A Current Affair, Today Tonight, Sunrise, The Today Show, talkback radio hosts and journalists across Australia whose coverage has resulted in higher Dick Smith Food sales, ensuing more jobs for our farmers and more financial support for needy charities.
Most of all he appreciates the huge number of patriotic Australians who not only spend the few cents extra to support our farmers, but encourage their friends to do so as well!

We are only able to help a very small percentage of the tremendous number of requests we receive. Please understand we will also not be able to reply to every letter individually. If we put on extra staff to reply to every request it will mean we will have even less to give away in donations and sponsorship to important causes. |
