2006 Asparagus Crop - A Disaster
Dick Smith Foods is the only Australian company that sells Australian grown and canned Asparagus, both as Green Asparagus Spears and also as Green Asparagus Cuts and Tips.
The Australian Asparagus crop is normally harvested between August and December with the majority being canned during October and November each year. In 2006 the crop was dramatically affected by firstly the drought and then by two severe frosts that saw the Asparagus crowns virtually stop growing. This meant that where it is usual to cut the fresh Asparagus up to twice a day during the growing season, sometimes the cutting was only done two or three times per week. The resultant spears were very thin, although excellent in flavour. This meant that there was great demand for them as fresh produce for both local and export markets. We were thus left with only about 20% of the quantity that would normally be available for canning.
The result is that we have run out of Dick Smith Foods Green Asparagus Spears and they are unlikely to be back on the shelves before December 2007. Presently we have good stocks of our Green Cuts and Tips which are excellent when used in mornays or salads.
